A Day of Awareness and Encouragement: Celebrating World Kidney Day

Dayal

On March 14, 2024, OSF joined hands with the Khoros team near Hosakote, Bengaluru, to observe World Kidney Day. This event was a powerful gathering focused on raising awareness, sharing support, and reminding everyone that kidney health is life health.

The day was dedicated to those fighting kidney disease and showcased the direct, vital relief provided by Project Dayal (our dialysis support fund).

A Community of Support

The celebration brought together a diverse and heartfelt community:

  • Project Dayal Heroes: Ten dialysis patients and their caretakers attended, giving guests a chance to hear firsthand about the severe challenges they face and the life-changing support they receive.
  • OSF Family: Students and beneficiaries from Project Shrestha participated, symbolizing the broader community that OSF serves.
  • Partners and Sponsors: Representatives from Khoros and OSF, along with staff from other principal sponsors of Project Dayal, were present, offering a huge source of encouragement to the patients.

The Doctor’s Prescription for Health

The highlight of the event was an essential message from Dr. G Sreeharsha, a leading Nephrologist. His practical, life-saving advice served as a clear action plan for everyone to protect their kidneys:

  • Stay Active and Fit: Regular movement is key to overall health.
  • Manage Vitals: Keep close tabs on your Blood Sugar Levels and Blood Pressure.
  • Hydrate Well: Always ensure you drink plenty of fluids.
  • Mind Your Diet: Monitor your weight and commit to a healthy diet.
  • Avoid Risks: Limit over-the-counter pill intake and avoid smoking.
  • Prioritize Testing: Make regular Kidney Function Tests a priority.

The World Kidney Day celebration was a moving reminder of the importance of community, timely intervention, and the profound difference a little bit of awareness—and a lot of support—can make.

The Gift of Life: Bringing Crystal-Clear Water to the Kuvi Tribe

Jal Sahay

For the people of the Kuvi tribal villages in the remote Koraput District of Odisha, the simple act of drinking water carried a daily fear. This is the story of how a critical mission in 2024 transformed that fear into hope, giving dignity, health, and a secure future back to an entire community.

A Risk Run Dry: The Fight for Purity

For generations, the residents of Patamanda, Jogipalur, Denganapayu, and Rangajodi relied on water piped directly from mountain sources. Though beautiful, this water was anything but safe. It was a persistent threat, silently attacking the health of the community, carrying:

  •  Contaminants from the wild (plant matter and animal waste)
  • Invisible industrial pollutants

This exposure meant that water-borne diseases were a constant, pervasive enemy, tragically limiting the potential and well-being of every family.

Turning on the Tap of Hope

OSF stepped in, determined to replace risk with unwavering reliability. Our project didn’t just install pipes; it installed a promise. We introduced advanced filtration systems utilizing Activated Carbon and Sand to deliver pristine, life-giving drinking water.

  • The Valleys Speak: In Patamanda and Jogipalur, the systems are fully functional, flowing with pure water.
  • The Hills Are Next: Work is rapidly concluding in the remote hillside villages of Denganapayu and Rangajodi—places so isolated, one only received road access in 2023!

Empowering the Caretakers: The 3-Day Transformation

A project is only as strong as the hands that maintain it. The true magic of this initiative is in the local ownership we built. We held a comprehensive 3-day training where the community came together to become the masters of their own water source.

Adult men and women united to form the Jal Samithi (Water Committee). We didn’t just hand over keys; we shared knowledge, emphasizing that clean water is a matter of life—impacting both physical and spiritual well-being.

Through hands-on technical sessions, the committee learned to:

  • Understand the Science behind the filtration.
  •  Maintain and Clean the systems expertly.
  •  Safeguard the water source from future contamination.

We transformed villagers into technical experts, ensuring this system will provide safe water for generations to come.

The Voices of Change

The most moving proof of success comes from those who drink the water every day:

“I never knew water could be filtered and made clean. This water tastes better, and the earlier smell and colour of the water has gone.”

Majhi Wadeka, Jal Samiti Member & Maintenance Head, Patamanda.

“The colour of this water is clearer and is better than the previous water. Thanks to the OSF team for the efforts and teaching about water in such a different manner.”

Daya Wadeka, Jal Samiti Member & Maintenance Team, Patamanda.

This initiative is a shining example of transformation powered by partnership. OSF extends heartfelt gratitude to our donors, whose support funded this most fundamental gift: the source of life itself.

Rebuilding Futures for Manipur’s Displaced Children

Project ZIL

The word “Zil” in the Manipuri context evokes roots, lineage, and continuity—a potent symbol of hope for families uprooted by violence. Our Project ZIL is dedicated to empowering these displaced communities who have lost everything, ensuring their future remains rooted in education and health.

The Harsh Reality in the Camps

The displaced individuals in Manipur have endured unimaginable loss, forced to flee their homes and livelihoods. Now, they reside in overcrowded relief camps where life is a daily struggle: cramped shared living spaces, inadequate sanitation, and rationed food. Deprived of the ability to earn, many parents face the heartbreak of not being able to educate their children, deepening their despair. In this dire situation, OSF has stepped in to provide a hand of support across six critical camps with a four-pillar approach:
  1. Nutrition Support (See our earlier story).
  2. Academic Support
  3. Textbooks & Uniforms Support
  4. Transportation and Fees Support

Supporting Education: A Chance to Dream Big

The displacement crisis has had a devastating impact on children’s education. Amidst the hardship, OSF found a partner in Hope Academy, a local school that opened its doors to children from the nearby relief camps. Our partnership provides the essential resources these children need to continue learning.

Coverage and Sustainability

Our goal is to ensure the uninterrupted education and access to essential resources for every child in our program.

  • Scope: We are currently supporting 330 displaced children living in the relief camps.
  • The Investment: Our support covers Uniforms, Fee support, Textbooks, and Transportation.
  • Budget: A monthly budget of ₹ 125,000 supports these 330 children, covering part of their school fees and the crucial transportation costs to get them from the camps to Hope Academy and back safely.

A Student’s Voice: Tersa Vaiphei

The best testimony comes from those whose lives we’ve helped stabilize. This is the voice of Tersa Vaiphei from the Youth Hostel Relief Camp:

“My parents are just farmers. When the conflict started, we hid in the jungle for three days before the army picked us up. I feel very uncomfortable in the relief camp because there is no privacy, especially for a girl.

I want to express my heartfelt thanks for supporting my school. It has helped me continue my education and dream big! Thank you for providing my friends and me with school supplies, materials, and fees. Because of you all, I can learn, read and write, discover new subjects, and make new friends.”

— With love, Tersa Vaiphei (Relief Camp Resident & Hope Academy Student)

Project ZIL: Nourishing the Roots of Manipur’s Displaced

Project ZIL

The word “Zil” (often found in the context of Zeliangrong communities) can refer to a lineage, clan, or root, symbolizing connection, origin, and continuity. For a displaced community, this meaning is particularly powerful, representing the hope of maintaining their roots despite displacement. In the face of conflict, the physical and emotional toll on displaced communities is immense. Our initiative, Project ZIL—a name that echoes the Manipuri concept of roots, lineage, and continuity—is focused on supporting the health and strength of families striving to hold onto their identity and hope.

Restoring Health Through Nutrition Support

Recognizing the urgent need to address the basic nutritional requirements of displaced families and children, OSF stepped up to provide a vital, consistent source of protein in the camps.

The simple addition of an egg—a power-packed source of nourishment—makes a significant difference in a displaced person’s diet. We are currently implementing this Egg Distribution program across six different camps, providing one egg to every individual once a week.

While our current resources allow for a budget of approximately ₹30,000–35,000 per month for this program, this weekly distribution is a profoundly welcomed change. It provides essential nourishment for all residents, and its impact is most critical for the healthy development of children and the well-being of pregnant women in the camps.

Project ZIL is not just about distributing food; it is about reinforcing the health of a community, helping them maintain their physical strength while they await the chance to re-establish their roots.

Relief in Distress: Standing with Communities in Crisis

Relief & Rehab

When disaster strikes, the immediate aftermath can be the most devastating. At OSF, our mission is to provide timely, vital support to communities facing unforeseen crises. Following the massive floods in Tamil Nadu and the recent unrest in Manipur, our rapid intervention provided crucial assistance, care, and resources to alleviate immense suffering.

Responding to the Deluge: Flood Relief at Chennai and Thoothukudi

The end of 2023 brought catastrophic weather to Tamil Nadu, severely impacting the lives and livelihoods of thousands.

Chennai’s Stalled City

In early December 2023, Cyclone Michaung brought unprecedented downpours to Chennai. The severe flooding brought large parts of the city to a standstill and resulted in widespread destruction, causing significant losses for thousands of families.

Thoothukudi’s Record Rainfall

Just weeks later in mid-December, the Thoothukudi (Tuticorin) region was ravaged by an extraordinary weather event, receiving an astounding 93 cm of rainfall in a single day. This extreme deluge caused widespread, severe damage.

Our Intervention

In the face of this widespread destruction, we immediately mobilized our relief efforts. Our support was specifically designed to reach the most vulnerable, including daily wage earners, women, individuals with disabilities, and those whose livelihoods were abruptly halted.

We provided dry rations to approximately 500 affected families. These packs were carefully curated to last 7-8 days and contained essential items necessary for survival, including:

  • Staples: Rice, wheat, rava (semolina), cooking oil, spices, onions, and tamarind.
  • Essentials: Sugar, salt, tea, biscuits.
  • Hygiene & Care: Soap, detergent, and sanitary napkins.

Our response ensured that families did not have to worry about finding their next meal while dealing with the immediate chaos and loss caused by the floods.
